Senior Wellness Program

November and Decemeber are senior month. During this time we are celebrating our senior pets by offering senior wellness screening at a reduced cost. With this screening you will also receive a complimentary bag of food appropriate for  your pet based on the test results.

Early disease recognition and treatment helps to extend the quality of our pet’s normal life expectancy. Research has shown that with humans, once you have reached the age of 65, the factors determining whether you live to the age of 80 is 35% genetic and 65% lifestyle. These lifestyle factors are things that we can control (for ourselves and our pets) and include diet, exercise and preventative medical care. Pets enter their senior years at the age of 7. To maximize the quality of life for older dogs and cats we have developed a senior wellness program of preventative health care. This program reflects our commitment to you and your pet so that we can help you enjoy a longer, healthier relationship.

The ten most common senior diseases that we see with senior pets are*:

1.       Periodontal disease/gingivitis                   6. Liver disease

2.      Obesity/diet insufficiency                        7. Heart disease

3.      Osteo-arthritis                                        8. Cancer

4.      Thyroid hormone abnormalities                9. Cognitive/senility disorder

5.      Kidney Disease                                      10. Diabetes Mellitus

*not necessarily in this order

The Senior Wellness Program consists of a thorough owner provided history followed by a detailed physical examination. Blood and urine analysis will detect any abnormalities in the organ systems that may not be detected in the physical exam.  The laboratory test results will be interpreted in correlation with the physical exam and history. If any abnormalities are detected than the appropriate follow-up tests will be recommended.
Normal test results are important too!
Normal results provide a base line for your pet and enable us to react more appropriately when changes do occur.

We recommend Wellness testing on an annual basis with biannual physical examinations. Caring for Senior pets means more than treating problems as they arise. Our goal is quality care through prevention!
